Autumn's War

Just as Autumn leaves, fleeing before the frost It hides itself in mounds Earth-bound splendor with hue now lost It falls with rustling sounds Where regal heads now bow to earth Shedding its ample dress Stepping out naked from head to girth It faces the cold with less 'tis time to rest, to slumber deep In somber gray and sheets of white Yet as the skies mourn and begin to weep In its fingers it holds a secret tight When the frost will flee when Winter's lost Just as Autumn leaves fleeing before the frost
