Autumn Leaves
In Fairfax, Alabama leaves are falling like the rain
The mom outlives her children with a sigh
So many are the hungry ones who linger by her roots
Or scatter in the wind and wave goodbye
Pecans are falling everywhere, falling one by one
Plant them in the earth and wait for spring
All the Fairfax children are reduced to mere adults
All the baby birds are on the wing
Subtle are the changes when the lawn is turning brown
Skies of blue are turning shades of grey
Colors of the spring are now the shadows of the fall
All the leaves of Autumn are that way.
