"FIRST PLACE"

Autumn Decay



Flowers fade, and leaves tumble, twirl ~
they fall fragile whirling, dancing, drifting.
Red, russet, glimmering gold,
death's decay beautiful, still, silent.
Wind whispers, birds trill, tweet,
branches broken, groan, moan mournful.
Cold crisp nights, days a warm welcome.

A beautifully atmospheric autumn verse. The flowing free-verse form and repeated soft sounds mirror the tumble and drift of falling leaves, while the rich colours, birdsong, wind, and mournful branches create a vivid sense of nature’s quiet, bittersweet decay.
