Autumn - Constanza

Autumn winds chant a soulful tune
Elusive songs they choose to play
as maple branches bend and sway

Aspen trees drop their leaves too soon
Hues of umber, amber and gold
as seasonal changes unfold

Across forest floors they are strewn
Russet carpets to lie upon
when in repose a sigh is drawn

Then comes the sad cries of a loon
Haunting sounds foreshadowing death
She calls her mate with one last breath

Like withered leaves, a life was hewn
Taken from loved ones in the night
A cherished soul risen in flight

Pale light spills from a sallow moon
Beneath its glow we weep and mourn
Grief pierces like a sharpened thorn

Autumn winds chant a soulful tune
Aspen trees drop their leaves too soon
Across forest floors they are strewn
Then comes the sad cries of a loon
Like withered leaves, a life was hewn
Pale light spills from a sallow moon

Jenna, a fitting and touching tribute both to autumn and to Connie. Soulful throughout, but I love how you delicately use the cries of the loon to shift our thoughts from the treasures of autumn to "the cherished soul risen in flight." Gorgeous writing in the Constanza form and a lovely melancholy message, going in my faves ~ John

I truly admired Connie and we'll all terribly miss her. I wanted to write something a bit personal about her and the season she loved most. Thank you for your kind words and for faving this one, John. I'm grateful that you have.

Your piece is wonderfully crafted and certainly has layers of universality. You note it's for Miss Connie (most respectful) but I expect she would immediately recognize it's charm and poignancy. POTD soon? Contest winner no doubt. :o)

Thank you for your kind sentiments, Arlo. Writing a Constanza tribute for Connie is reward enough. I don’t think of POTD as an honor because the way in which it’s chosen is flawed. The Soup Fairy doesn’t approve of me.

I've no doubt she'd be proud of the many poets who are using her invented form, if only she knew. Thank you so very much for liking mine and the others, Tom.
