Autumn

A multi-hued leaf fell slowly
        next to me
        Lenau-like
As I stood watching its demise.
I did not ask the lonely leaf
        if it loved
        the gentle dying
        of autumn.
Perhaps the leaf had enjoyed
        its birth
        and growth
        through summer
While it survived fierce
        storms
Testing its full strength
And now wanted nothing
        more
Than to die gently.

Beautiful...perhaps that is what we all need in the end, a peaceful drifting away

Thank you for your observation. Nicholas Lenau wrote , "Ich liebe dieses mildes Sterben" - I love this gentle dying.

Yes, I am OK. I actually saw that leaf fall as I was working on my 6th book of poetry and remembered what Nicholas Lenau said concerning autumn. Thank you for your comment,
