Notes About The Poem

I used to spend many hours watching cricket and listening to broadcasts of Test cricket as a boy in the middle of the night when the matches were happening in England. I havent taken any interest in sport for twenty years. This limerick is a memory when Australia reigned supreme with fast bowlers called Lillee and Thompson. For those unfamiliar with cricket we Aussies called the UK cricketeers Pommies . I have no idea where that label comes from. I guess there are many less endearing terms yelled at matches. I remember England had a fellow called Tufnell in the team. He couldn't throw a ball very far. The Aussie crowd would yell Hey Tufnell throw the ball up here and we'll throw it back to the wicketkeeper for you

Australia versus England

A young bowler he liked to play cricket
In his career took many a wicket
the crowd he enthralls
as he shines up his balls
He tempts the Pommies to snick it

TABLE TENNIS
A keen young sportsman named Dennis
Favourite game is called table tennis
hits balls over the net
won many a set
A plumber when young an apprentice
