At Sunset

He watched as the sunset over a tranquil sea
nothing about it's beauty reflected his mood
a bright moon shone onto the water
how can it be he pondered that I am to leave?
acceptance came slowly, with fear and sorrow
leaving a world that would continue without him
his contributions would remain-but for how long?
his memory fading day by day, until forgotten
the night sky twinkled with stars that played in the sky
the waves called to him as they rolled into shore
he waded purposefully into the ocean
I am ready he thought-to leave before a new day
he was never found, not the old him
nobody had watched him leave, but I
I thought of him often-until his memory began to fade
what I had not seen that under the moonlight
a figure had walked from the sea
he was she- beautiful and free.
