At Summer's Dusk
As dusk descends, magenta streaks the sky
and silence dominates the countryside,
where corn stalks in the farmers’ fields stand high.
I watch a bird across this vista glide.
It swoops behind a willow; I embrace
vast beauty which before me I behold
while breathing eventide! Across my face
a light breeze ripples. I’ve no need of gold
or city’s glitter. Silver I prefer -
that silver which will shimmer very soon
as dusk turns into night and stars appear
in myriads, surrounding gibbous moon.
And flickering around me now as though
to imitate the stars, how the fireflies glow!
