Notes About The Poem

Iambic Tetrameter

As Small As I Am

Of all the demons I do face
the greatest foe is more than me.
Self-deception's been hard to trace,
my delusion I can not see.

Ever chasing windmills to and fro,
noble blades have a part to play.
Whirling around issues I will go
but faced with risk, I turn away.

I've been spinning so many years
all puffed up with my grand plan.
A consuming vortex of fears,
glad to settle as also-ran.

Tried to be big, more of a man;
this my truth, as small as I am.

I suspect many of us have a little Don Quixote inside of us..fighting battles against enemies that do not exist. There’s also catastrophizing, self doubt, self limiting beliefs and even striving for perfectionism that play with and upset our mindset. I often say the only way round a problem is through it but that is so much easier said than done as your sonnet I think alludes to. It’s all a human thing not helped by the times in which we live. Thank God for poetry. Great read. Cheers - Gary

Gary, your insight and sensibilities are so refreshing. As a poet, I try to reach deeper within to tap something original or of use to others. Mostly I miss but your commentary makes me think that on occasion I do touch the truth. Thanks for your comment.
