As Deafening As Silence

I can not be swayed by a stranger's words,
they are mere annoyances to my ears.
For unlike a murmuration of birds,
a stranger's words cannot move me to tears.
Only those I let close can betray me;
for they're invested with a shield of trust.
And because I love them, I do not see
the footprints of betrayal in their dust.
Truth can be as deafening as silence;
when I choose not to hear what others say.
And though hope is not an exact science,
it's known to hold reality at bay.
Betrayal begins with trust, as does love,
the one emotion God asks from above.
