As Deafening As Silence

I can not be swayed by a stranger's words;
they do not sound convincing to my ears.
For unlike a murmuration of birds,
a stranger's words cannot move me to tears.
Only those I let close can betray me;
for they are imbued with a shield of trust.
And because that shield blinds me, I can’t see
the footprints of betrayal in their dust.
Truth can be as deafening as silence;
when I choose not to hear what others say.
And though hope is not an exact science;
it's known to hold reality at bay.
Betrayal begins with trust, as does love,
the only emotion souls share above.
