Armorbearer

I got a job,
got only one thing to do
My job is simply this,
it is to protect you
Nowadays, I guess you could say,
I would be called a bodyguard
But back in the day,
when bodyguards were a terror,
I was known by another name,
I was called an armorbearer
But the most famous armorbearer
that you never even heard of,
was the one who bare the shield
for the man whom the Philistines loved
That's right, Goliath
He was a powerfully strong, giant of a man
The tip of his spear was bigger than your hand
With his huge, enormous sword,
he would cut you in half
And as he fed your body to the birds,
he'd let out a blood curdling laugh
Can you imagine being his armorbearer?
You had to be a stone cold killer,
you had to love shedding blood wherever
Now this unknown armorbearer
carried Goliath's shield into every battle;
deflecting wayward blows,
stopping any well-aimed arrows
He was the imposing man with the shield,
who went before an even scarier stature of a man
But the Holy Bible records how their end began
They called out young David one fateful day,
trash talked him like he was just another weak prey
David replied: you come to me with a sword, spear and a shield
To the uncircumcised, the God of Israel would never yield
Then David picked up five stones,
chosen by the Hand of God
And slung one towards Goliath with the velocity of a gunshot
That stone sank deep into the giant's forehead,
and he fell to the ground, killed straight dead
Then David went up to Goliath's body,
got the giant's sword and cut off his head
Now the question that needs to be asked,
what happened to the armorbearer?
The man with the shield who always protected Goliath,
did he die, did he kill himself, did he flee?
When David cut off Goliath's head,
where in the world was he?
Perhaps you can explain this mystery to me
Maybe this is how this aphorism came to be,
killing two birds with one stone, now makes perfect sense, y'see
I believe only half of the story was told:
Goliath was indeed killed,
and I'm persuaded the armorbearer was also

Hi Freddie, I enjoyed this piece very much. I often heard how Jesse's young son David(the future king) used his sling shot to bring down Goliath. But I never heard of Goliath's armorbearer. I heard of David armorbearer Jonathan. I must go read it again:-) Alexis

I left the verses at the bottom, Alexis. Most people have read or heard this story in the Holy Bible but they pass over this big detail. Love you, dear. RW

Good point, Daisy. Did you notice the subtle hint where Goliath loved to boast that he would feed his fallen victim's body to the birds. It got flipped on him ... kill two birds w/one stone. Hmm. Something to consider, eh. Ty for the loving comment. A 7, wow! Much love to you, lady. RW
