And the Beat Went On
Listen to poem:
A drummer, a soldier’s son,
Resplendent as he beat that drum,
Leading men to war, one by one—
His fear he must overcome.
Resplendent as he beat that drum,
As grown men fell with cries of pain,
His fear he must overcome,
As his comrades, they were slain.
As grown men fell with cries of pain,
The drummer’s beat went on and on.
As his comrades, they were slain,
The battle’s outcome was not foregone.
The drummer’s beat went on and on—
A braver boy you will never find.
The battle’s outcome was not foregone,
A great example to all mankind.
A braver boy you will never find,
Leading men to war, one by one.
A great example to all mankind—
A drummer, a soldier’s son.
