and I want to fly away

I sigh long and sad for I have years and lifetimes and oceans of sadness to let go of from d e e p , deep inside me . . . and I want to F L Y away- but I am walking . . . it is WINTER with a freezing wind and the snow is c r u n c h i n g under my feet I smell churned up earth, and the DECAY of dead flowers and whispers from the graves I pass by . . . the day is d a r k no sun shines just thick dark clouds hang like ghosts and it is snowing and the sky is w e e p i n g white hidden, a bird cries like a new baby and I want to fly a w a y_ but I follow the hearse carrying my baby boy oh, I feel detached a watcher of this scene . . . I hear the prayers DRIFTING among the stones and in the b a r r e n snow covered trees but the smell of roses is choking me, then . . . . my family turn and are leaving but I am a STATUE weeping alone I sigh long and sad and then, I am s i n g i n g a lullaby for my baby it is drifting and f l o a t i n g in the wind . . . _______________________ August 24, 2021 Edit Poetry/Free Verse/and I want to fly away Copyright Protected, ID 08-1384-097-24 All Rights Reserved, 2021, Constance La France Submitted to the Standard contest, A Brian Strand You Choose sponsor, Brian Strand, Judged 08/24/2021

Constance I had such separation anxiety when my girls were young & dropped them at day care on my way to my deli in d'town Mpls, I would sing an old family Irish lullaby ("too-ra loo-a-loo-ra") to them for us both! Love this darkly rich poem! I know a graveyard in Lacrosse Wi (where my G'parents r buried) with black squirrels lurking & gloom in the air!

James, that is sweet you sang your kids a song, yes it is a dark poem but that is my forte and I write my sorrow over and ever in a thousand different ways ~ Constance

Ah, this is so sad, so dark, and yet so compelling. Your rich images lead us to an inevitable "drifting and floating in the wind." I can so feel your sadness.
