Notes About The Poem

An Unpaid Debt

With less tomorrows than I've yesterdays
In looking back I have but one regret
Before that last tomorrow fades away
I wish that I could pay an unpaid debt

Back to a summer day so long ago
How frivolous we were with innocence
Two kids in love and way too young to know
Decisions made in haste have consequence

In tenderness I'd kiss away her tears
I'd tell her I am sorry for her pain
Give back the love I'd carried all those years
Convince her that her gift was not in vain

I'd ask for her forgiveness on my knees
Tears of contrition I would surely weep
Then thank her for life's sweetest memory
And with her blessing peacefully I'd sleep

I've never stopped writing "do-over" poetry and consider it the bane of my old guy existence. I read this last night before beddy-bye and was greatly affected by it. I've no fancy words to say, just great job! bests atcha ~ john

Very touching poem, Daniel. Hearts do heal w/time. But forgiveness make them impervious to the next heart break situation. Fine write, good work. Enjoyed it much. Ty for sharing.

Beautiful, Daniel - I missed this somehow and it is such a delightful and touching find. I can relate to the emotional feel so beautifully expressed. This is more than touching, it is nostalgic to me because it takes me back to young love and the residual feelings that linger through time. Congratulations ... CayCay

Hi Daniel, such poems as these always touch me deeply. I can relate to these words. Ut is a catch 22 situation. I sometimes wonder what would have been if i had went to the states with the lass? Would she be alive now if i had been with her? Only God knows the answer to that one. Took me over thirty years to forgive myself. Mary found me and i knew love again. Funny how some writes can bring back these thoughts. An excellent write Daniel. Let your emotional song sing. A definite seven Daniel.

Our past and our transgressions if we could go back and do over again :-( sometimes we are led a different path for our well-being so we need to forgive ourselves because it was not meant to be . Beautiful write Daniel Hugs Eve :-)

Thank you, Mrs Eve. You are correct. It is more about self forgiveness. That is what the poem is really talking about. i know the person has gone on to live a happy and successful life and probably hasn't given it a second thought but I on the other hand am the one who broke a promise. I have not forgiven myself.

I especially love that first line - it suggests that you are actually quite comfortable being in the autumn of your years; or would be if you could make this one amend. A bitter sweet poem.

Thank you, Tony. Yes, I am comfortable with my age. I have always tried to be a man who kept his word and I can think of a time when I did not. We all have our regrets and I know deep down I have been forgiven but I would like to tell them personally. I appreciate your kind comments and support:)

The first line starts this gem off perfectly and I can certainly identify because I have past misdeeds as do we all...Alas, we cannot change the past, only learn from it. Yet the memories remain...GREAT piece of writing sir! - Tim
