An Open Window

An open window invites a curious look What enticing stories are lurking inside Fluttering pages of a neglected book, What has become of those who occupied This once grand abode of the leisure class, Living in the most favored neighborhood With manicured shrubs and fresh-cut grass, What turned the tide from times so good? When tight shingles framed a painted sill Flowered walks welcomed all who'd heed, Admiringly, and most likely they would still But untended the place has gone to seed. All that beckons is an open window calling Attention to the contents long abandoned, I stand in awe wondering why I'm stalling The old place my attention commanding.

Well, I guess I'm a bit weird, L M. For me "an open window" is for looking out of and for letting a fresh breeze in. I do love abandoned houses and buildings, of course, but more so from a distance or as settings for scary books and movies.

I pass this building about every day, Jim, and it always captures my attention. It's in a beautiful location, but is going to rack and ruin. Shame.

Ah, I'm afraid this one would be out of my price range even in its present condition! And, if I could afford it, I couldn't afford the fixin's.

Love this theme Milton. There is a road that my wife and I love to travel on. There you will find old abandoned homes some dating back many years. You wonder about the families that lived there and what happened to the home. I always wonder why they didn't sell and make some money and a New owner would more than likely take care of the property. Thanks for sharing...

It is nice to receive inspiration from things that you see and inspire a theme in writing.

I passed this place on my way to the park today. It was such a gorgeous day here, so I thought I might get inspired in the park to write something of merit. I came up with two poems that worked for contests; this one was just inspired by the open window on the second floor.

(chuckling) You know, I do that, too, Ilene. My wife used to make up stories about people...folks she didn't know at all...just observed their homes, etc., etc.
