America's Song

When I was a child,
the world appreciated
kindness, honesty and manners
more than they do now.
Then there was a different kind of style.
Women were more feminine.
Men were more masculine.
America sang a better song.
Families were important.
Love meant something.
People valued morals.
Schools had Christmas programs
backing up what the parents
were teaching their children.
It was not a kind of world
where "My God is better than your God"
was being taught.
Goodness was the same in all languages.
That's why our children
were not whores.

Your imagery reminds me of poetry masters of old, I'm talking 19th century: Coleridge.

Native Americans everywhere are no doubt cheering for this poem, as am I.
