American Activist

“I don’t want to hear about blood and guts;
I’m clean-white inside, like a potato,”
Thus she dismissed her true anatomy
In favor of conceptual notion.
Remembering this while I watch the news,
I think maybe I too favor notion
Avoiding the focus on blood and guts –
The country is at war, but I’m at peace
I don’t want to dwell on inner workings --
the lies and deals and cheats of government,
the crimes and atrocities of commerce,
the injustices and world tragedies.
A blue-eyed redneck, all clean-white inside,
I veg on the couch like a potato.
