headed the wrong way.  pride comes before the fall and america is falling...

america, what happened? they found him on the backward side of a life which headed down unused words ruled his mind they were the only friends he’d found his body wore deep wrinkles so long before it’s time carved by words glued together then pasted with awkward rhymes the only coat upon his back was the silence he’d always worn and he took it with him as he left it was enough to keep him warm his daydreams left him stranded his hopes were shadows on the ground and the silent voices in his head became the evenings only sound he wore his coat of silence well and pushed the words aside shattered dreams like darkness fell and in the hush of emptiness he died when they rolled his body over the words on his coat were true “america, what happened? these words are meant for you.” © tolbert

Love the deep meaning of this poem. As some of we sane Americans recognize, 'silence is consent'. God bless.

Thank you so very much Jan. You are so right that 'silence is consent'. Recently when I was wrestling with the affairs of our country, I wrote to myself...'In his mind he's wonderin'...if all those things he never said...could have changed the way that things have changed...and made a better world instead.' Thank you for reminding me of MY words with YOUR words. Have a blessed day.

You’ve written a very dramatic poem about the fall of what was once a nation we could be proud of. Respected by other nations but no one respects a bully. Well written, Wayne.

Thank you for writing, Lin. Indeed, America was once a 'light on the hill' and yet we are experiecing not a dimming of that light but a total extinquishing of the light of freedom and hope. Thanks so much for reading and responding. May you be blessed on this day.
