After Losing a Child

Do you seek me?
     I'm still here!
Look for me in nature,
for my love is growing there.
My messages are written,
in earth and sea and air.

     Do you hear me?
Listen to the song birds,
as each new day is born.
Can't you hear me singing to you,
in the early morn?

     Do you feel me?
When the wind is gently blowing,
or a mist is in the air,
can't you feel me touching you,
and messing up your hair?

     Do you see me?
Glimpse my face in any flower.
Breathe deep the beauty that you see.
And green the grass you walk upon,
I walk along with thee.

     Do you sense me?
Even at times when you cry,
know that I am near.
I'm the finger on your cheek,
tasting every tear.

     Do you search for me?
When you turn to God in prayer,
know in your heart that I am there.

You bring and raw and beautiful gift as you word and smith. I have read deeply and long in your repetoire, and have barely begun to absorb this density, intensity, honesty.

Your comments on my writing, Gerald, are deeply appreciated. I have not visited this poem in quite a while, and it was comforting to read it again. So thank you for bringing those precious memories back to me. Gary is always with me because there is no distance in death that can separate us.

I apologize, Victoria, for not seeing your comment until now when Gerald's comments brought me back to this page. I like what you said about the reader walking beside me through my experience. And I pray it comforts others in their loss. Now I'm going to read one of your poems. Blessings, Darlene

Thank you, BE, This is not a recent loss, but there is no distance in death. Sometimes it feels like I just lost him yesterday. And I am comforted by the knowledge that I will see my son again. Thanks for reading and commenting on my poem. You are a compassionate person and your thoughts are appreciated. Blessings, Darlene

Thank you, Dan. Years ago, I lost my son, Gary, to Cystic Fibrosis. He was 13. I wrote this shortly after his death. If you like this poem, you might also like the one I wrote about him called, "A Rainbow Glitters" Thanks for reading my poems.
