Affairs of the Heart
We stood apart waiting for dusk to fall
pale the light that may not bring us to next week:
Both of us wanted ties of chains relieved
you from angst, and I from not loving enough.
Then you entered into a gentle maze of just how
time drained pool of years I barely recalled,
our moments chilled by desperate silence
while late-night marked your face, ashen.
And there you were, beautiful in dew’s reflection
sharing the glee from our early anniversaries
when days held our pledge, ' for better or worse, '
as I unveiled this mask I dared not shed.
Back and forth you whispered like fragrant mist
tracing our breakthroughs when stars grew narrow;
until we slowly choked on milestones
of owned joys and trials …I listened, listened.
A fool, I cannot ride the last sunset without her,
then she asked," is there anything you need to say?"
“My love, I promise to fill my heart's absence
oh we must go on; charmed life is ours, evermore."
