Adultery--To Forgive Or Not

Every love story is different,
And every situation too.
So until it really happens
One might not know what she would do.
I’m sure my heart would have been broken
Had my true love been betrayed.
And my life mate had forgotten
All the promises he made.
I’d have the right to be unhappy.
I would have shed my anguished tears
And have said I’d not forgive him
For a million, million years.

I hope I’d not have made decisions
While so unhappy and dismayed,
That I would have licked my wounds awhile
Until the hurt began to fade.
It could be one indiscretion
Need not be a full life sentence,
If he had been truly sorry
And was willing to do penance.

On the other hand if there had been
A long, emotional affair
And he’d given her his true self
That was only mine to share,
Then it may be the hurt was too bad
And I could not forgive him.
I wouldn’t settle for a half of love,
It had been better just to leave him.

But the children, oh the children,
They would be so very sad.
I hope I’d be wise enough to spare them
And not to speak ill of their dad.
I know that I would worry then
And have started to wonder
If what the Lord had joined together
I had the right to put asunder.

Hi Joyce, In adultery it is never just one indiscretion. What kills a marriage is the initial withdrawing of emotional love from the adulterer to his partner which inevitably alerts and is often the death knell of the relationship. Congrats on your win.

Joyce; This is very well written and very sincere. It is very hard to make dissions for this kind of problem. I think that women always forgive more than men. Thanks for reading my poem. Lucilla

I like honest answers to hard questions. I see that you brought up promises. But to me it is a matter of unwriten law or the thing that need not be said. How ever we have needs and wher do we go when they are not being met. There in should come understanding.

It is a tough decision...just depends on the situation, like you said - how much was shared...good write :) best wishes in the contest!

I know opinions differ on this subject, but not all are joined by God. If we made our own decisions without His blessings, then He had nothing to do with the joining. A deep write Joyce. All the best in the contest. One love. Joy Wells

I suffered just like this, but I don't think God anything to do with the joining, because I purposed in my heart that this was right, even when I had questions about what was obvious.

Great work that speaks so well of the emotion that would be involved in such an incident..It also speaks of the whole situation that one would go through..Reads like a winner to me..Enjoyed reading ..Good luck in the contest..Thanks for stopping by..I too have trouble with all the greusome things that people write at the Halloween season..Sara
