Absent Father

Who is my father? That's one question I will never have the answer to. My father abandoned me before I was even born. Thankfully, my mother kept me, when she easily could have given me up for abortion or adoption. My mother is one half of me, but I was always curious about the man who made up my other half. I don't know where he lives, I don't know if he is alive or dead. I don't have a picture of him, I don't even know his name. I know nothing about my father. Is he a doctor, is he a teacher, is he the mailman, is he my neighbor? I often wondered, if I could have walked passed him on the street one day, and never even known it. We could have been standing next to each other, in line at the grocery store. And, he wouldn't even know that I was his daughter. I could have brothers and sisters out there somewhere. Maybe I am not an only child. I would like to see this man's face just once. But, if he didn't love me enough, to abandon me, maybe I should do the same thing to him.

Have just read this poem of yours with some understanding. My future son in law doesn't know his father, like you he was abandoned.....so sad. He is a fine young man who we will be proud to have in our family, his fathers loss. Hugs for you.

Thanks for reading, Elizabeth. I really appreciate your kind words on this poem... Not many people will understand the feeling of never knowing who their father was. It's been tough at times, especially around Father's Day when I was a kid. But, I am so grateful that my mother was always there and so kind and loving... Sending hugs and best wishes to you and your family :)

Someone should be able to help trace him down. If this is true it is very sad. Congratulations on your win. Love, Joyce

Some of my poetry is fictional, but every word of this one is the truth. And, it is very sad not knowing who my father is. Thank you for the kind words, Joyce! I appreciate it very much. :)

gosh, it's so sad you can't know. Some people, it is very important to them to know this. Your mother won't tell you even after all this time? My hubbie was in a similar situation. He became a bounty hunter one year and tracked his father down. But never saw him in person. He found out he has at least three half brother/sisters out there. But never met them and probably never will. I find it so sad but he does not even seem to care!!! sure enjoyed your poem.

Not having a Dad around was tough when I was a kid, especially around Father's Day. I always wondered about him, and I would still like to know who he was. Yet, every time I ask my Mom about it, she sort of ignores the question. I will probably never know who he is, yet he is a part of me, no matter what. Thank you for stopping by, Andrea, I'm glad that you enjoyed this poem. :)
