About the School Term That Ended This Thursday
The coldness of past memories
nagging in my mind,
when the first sight turns out to be
an army officer in a dark green suit,
with a rifle in his hand,
not the pleasing dark blue and gold school gate.
The familiar yells and greetings,
replaced by a awkward cold silence...
when every students stand in single file,
to pass the metal detector's always doubtful glance
without suspicion.
bags checked, inside out,
colourless and transparent they are,
and almost everything else:
water bottles, lunch boxes, pencil boxes..
And every classroom filled with voices,
always not talking of how they spent the extended holiday
but the reason* for being extended,
even though it was banned.
Student population rises,
but only after more than half of May was gone.
Teachers helpless,
unable to cover the syllabus
but also unable to have morning or afternoon classes.
Sports clubs and other societies...
their meetings always lacking members...
Unable to mind our own business,
cuz no students was allowed to open classrooms
without a teacher.
And even before the scent of the newly starched uniforms were gone,
exams began to haunt the days...
stretching until it ended on the 1st, the last day of the term.
Oh man, is this what our school term used to be?
* for the 'reason', you can read the poem "Flashback of the Day" which I have written on 4/21/2019
I decided on not mentioning it in the poem...
