A Welcome In the Hillside Premiere Contest Winner

Listen to poem:
( Mum pictured in her Welsh costume on St David's Day) I wrote these words to fit the well known Welsh song melody 'Calon Lan' as in the audio above. Wales to me, through childhood vision calls to mind a country home, full of welcome and adventure where I once would freely roam. Land of song and rolling hillsides rugged coasts and golden sand, where a rich, poetic language kindles pride throughout the land. I can hear the voices singing in the mountains and the dales, soulful harps are gently playing calling me back home to Wales. Land of song and rolling hillsides rugged coasts and golden sand, where a rich, poetic language kindles pride throughout the land. There my Mother's smile awaits me and emotions soon revive of the people we have cherished whose fond memories survive. Land of song and rolling hillsides rugged coasts and golden sand, where a rich, poetic language kindles pride throughout the land. 17.06.20 Wales Poetry Contest sponsored by Julia Ward 'Battle of most acclaimed 2020 POEMS' Poetry Contest Sponsored by John Hamilton

Again, beautiful! loved the song and your poem. I am currently working on my Masters of Fien Arts, English Lit. This is the second time I have studied the History of the English language. We wend into the original Saxon, and some Celt. I wish we could do Welsh too. Beautiful

Bore da! Congratulations on your trophy win in my contest, Wendy. In your reply to John you thought I might not hear the audio rendition to the tune. It was there. The only time I didn't have it was on the last round. Thank you for your wonderful entry!

Wendy, I so enjoyed your lyrical ode to Wales enhanced by the pic of your lovely mother in St David's Day attire and the audio rendition of the tune. At 2.44 a new tune started which I recognized; we sing a hymn to that tune (Blaenwern). Your innate musical sense lends well to lyric writing, this is perfectly wonderful and ought to be a winner. Blessings ~ John

What a lovely comment to wake up to, John. I’m actually sitting with my Mum in Wales right now on our socially distanced settees! I love this tune and had also noticed the hymnal addition towards the end which is familiar to me. I enjoyed writing lyrics to the Welsh classic and personalising with a photo but of course Julia will only see the poem text which isn’t’t so effective on its own. I don’t have the luxury of time to write poetry at the moment but much appreciated your comments,John. Thank you.

Perhaps Wendy, the most unspolit & rockpooled seashore we ever holidayed was the Gower, weather permitting of course.Straight out of a Blyton 30s fivebook.Always a feat to remember when we beat them them at Cardiff as its so rare and a male oice choir from the valleys brings shivers to the spine, all this without even mentining Dylan

Hello,Brian. Yes, it's definitely a beautiful part of Wales where we too enjoyed fantastic walks along the unspoilt coast. It's hard to put your finger on it but you're absolutely right about Welsh male voice choirs - the tone and feelings evoked when listening are amazing. Thanks for 'dropping by'.

Bora da! Wendy.I share a love of Wales, well expressed here. Half of my family live in the Bridgend area - Porthcawl and Cornelly. My father passed away in Bridgend Hospital. Incidentally some of the best speakers if English come from the region e.g. Richard Burton; Anthony Hopkins.

Bore da to you, Geoffrey. Thank you for taking the time to read and bring this lovely personal feedback. I too had many and still have a few relatives living in the Bridgend /Ewenny area including my wonderful Mother who I am longing to visit again when we get the all clear. I wonder if you also had childhood beach holidays at Ogmore and Southerndown? Thank you so much for sharing, Geoffrey.

Quite an attractive mother you have! My late wife was born and raised in Pont-y-pridd, daughter born Cas Newydd. I have always thought English would be greatly improved if spoken with a Welsh accent! Aloha! Rico

Welsh genealogy is quite a trial, but her's is posted on wikitree.com. Her father, Lemuel Roy Griffiths, was a Lloyd's Bank Manager, with quite a number of kin from the Bridgend area. However, Roy's father, Lemuel John Griffiths of Llan Draw Farm, was the last child raised with both parents fluent Welsh speakers. Aloha from Hawai'i! Rico

Well what a small world, Rico. Mum lives near Bridgend so not far at all from where your wife grew up. Was she a Welsh speaker? I hope you enjoyed the trip back to Wales in the audio. Thank you so much for commenting and the personal details,Rico.

Some parts are really beautiful, Gershon and well worth a visit. Both of my parents were born and bred in Wales. My Mother's Mother was brought up as a Welsh speaker but as it was thought to be inferior to English in those days, she didn't use it once married and never passed it onto Mum. What a shame. Thank you so much for reading and taking the time to comment,Gershon.
