A Way To Live
I saw a large dog walking near by
right by an elderly woman 1/2 his size
he stood near her-- eyes alert and sure
I watched them go cross the street on their daily tour
And wondered could she use him as a horse for a ride
Though very dark and large he was her devoted guide
Then I dropped off some funds to the SPCA
Listening to their needy barks by the park near the pathway
So here I am waiting to hear from my own rescue pet
Wondering if another dog at the shelter
might be waiting for me, I have one— many have three
but I am tired and getting old, waiting for another surgery
He will be home soon and we are waiting impatiently
My husband and I have loved our dogs over the years
They have kept our hearts close with joy and tears
and aware though no children this is what we chose
years of illness and fatigue so dogs are what God had chosen to give
allowing us a way to care and to love living beings — a way to live
