Notes About The Poem

Edward's This or That Vol 31 Contest <> March 24, 2025

A Tipping Balance

We all have moments when happiness rings true
When everything seems to finally be going right
No nimbus clouds to spoil blue skies or the view
until fate steps in and our lives turn dark as night.

What efforts we've made to stay in balance is lost.
No matter what we try, harmony does not prevail
and life is stressful, for hardship comes with a cost.
So, we need a counterweight that will tip the scale

To use a simple analogy, think of a teeter totter ride
where balance keeps us from landing on the ground.
The ups and downs we face are very difficult to abide.
What will keep us standing? Where can it be found?

With a positive attitude we can begin in heart and mind
when they battle over things on which they don't agree.
Not an easy task to keep them harmonized and aligned.
When they struggle for power, it can end in catastrophe.

A bit of faith may lead to symmetry and set things right.
Nature handless it perfectly with its seasonal changing,
and like migratory birds on feathered wings that take flight,
tipping the balance in our favor can work with rearranging.

I understand that, Andrea. There are some contests that require more than a little thought, but well worth the challenge. Thanks!

I’m not sure what life balance actually is Lin, some metaphorical counterweight would indeed be the holy grail, but I’m not sure if fate allows for it, you offer the reader a little ray of hope in the final stanza, maybe hope is the only counterweight we have in the end, as always an excellently written piece, All the best for contest, cheers David

A metaphorical counterweight... hmmm. I think I'll just settle for a dish of rocky road ice cream, balanced with caramel sauce and toasted pecans. After that, I won't care if I'm balanced or not. lol Thanks for your suggestion of hope being a counterweight, much better than my idea. I am always grateful your support.

I enjoyed reading your "A Tipping Balance" write. Great Picture... Life is all about balance. I think most do not find it. Love your line, "A bit of faith may lead to symmetry and set things right." So Very True. Have a blessed spring day writing away.........

You're right about it being difficult to find. Thanks, Paula.

Stepping back and weighing things up before we make a decision sometimes helps or zigging instead of zagging can balance the scales. Tom

That's true, Tom. We've been using lots of song titles and lyrics in comments lately, but on your comment, I'm thinking, 'Fools Rush In.' If only we knew when to zig instead of zag we might find life more harmonious. ;-)
