A Silent Good-Bye
A Silent Good-bye
She didn’t see it slipping away
did not feel time’s erasers
slowly clearing the board
was not aware of her shrinking world.
It took longer to find things
like words and faces
memories and laughter
her cigarettes.
She did not feel the cold
numbing her thoughts
a lifetime fading
to black.
She had seen them leave once
10 children
off to school, to marriage,
too soon, too far.
Now she watched them
leaving again, fading,
slipping away
forever.
