A Sierra Nevada Mountain Peak

"I seem to find the happiness I seek
when we're out together dancing cheek to cheek." ~ Irvin Berlin

"I seem to find the happiness I seek
when I'm atop a Sierra Nevada mountain peak." ~ by poet

The time for our annual camping trip is here.
My brothers and I - none of us can wait
for these two summer weeks each year.

We wake up early and hit the interstate.
Still dark, we see the amazing desert sky -
nature's breathtaking, starry slate.

The sunrise over cactus meets the eye,
above, a majestic California hawk
soars in the smog-less, clear blue sky.

Arriving in the mountains, it's time to walk.
We'll hike to a flowing crystal creek,
and hear the silence - there is no need to talk.

We will find the happiness we seek,
standing on a Sierra Nevada peak.

David, we have always loved being in the Sierras any time, any season, even in the summer or winter crowds! Seems like we don't get into the mountains often enough! My poem Nova is about my experience of the Sierras. It must be beautiful up there now especially after all of the snow they received this weekend! Your poem really expresses the wonders of this "range of light!" Best wishes for the contest. Love the drawing! Blessings.

Thanks, Sam - I'm glad you enjoyed the poem and picture! I haven't been up there in a long time. Driving and walking is a little tough with my back these days, so I'm operating mainly in memory mode, but anyway, yep, sure is beautiful up there!

Im glad that you enjoy nature. The majority of Americans miss the wondrous times when a person can be alone and touch the heart of the earth. May you always be young enough to travel there.
