A Seed Of Love Divine
I met her when the skies were clear,
And youth knew neither doubt nor fear;
A timid child with tear-stained eyes,
She entered life beneath my skies.
She wept...the world to her was new,
So small, so strange, so cold, so blue;
I whispered soft, with boyish grace,
“Don’t cry,” and smiled into her face.
Her tears were pearls, her smile the sun,
And thus our gentle days begun;
She sat beside me, sweet and shy,
And time moved slow as clouds drift by.
But fate ...that ever-fickle hand...
Soon drew her to another land;
The seat she filled lay bare and still,
Yet in my heart, I saw her still.
Years wandered past, as seasons fade,
Our childhood ghosts in dreams replayed;
Then once again, in youth’s bright prime,
She came...as though recalled by time.
Her eyes...the same! Her voice...the same!
It stirred my soul, it lit the flame;
And in that glow, love’s vow was made,
A bond the stars themselves forbade.
We talked through nights that never slept,
While moonlight through the windows crept;
Her laughter flowed...so soft, so free,
She called me “love,” she called me “thee.”
But roses bloom, then bleed and fall,
And pride will answer sorrow’s call;
Her mother’s scorn, the cruel divide,
Broke what our hearts could not abide.
She turned away...to brighter halls,
Where music sang and fortune calls;
While I remained, a shadowed man,
Still loving, yet beneath the span.
And then...one eve, by fate’s design,
She stood before this heart of mine;
Her eyes grew wet...she softly pled,
“I think of you,” was all she said.
Her tears returned ... as once before,
And time rewound to days of yore;
“Don’t cry,” I whispered, calm, resigned,
Though sorrow trembled in my mind.
We parted thus ... no vows, no chain,
Just memories sweet as autumn rain;
And though she lives another’s bride,
I bless the love I set aside.
For through her loss, I found my way,
To gentler hearts, to brighter day;
And though the ache may softly stay,
It hums of peace ... not disarray.
So let her rest, where memories keep,
In that first dawn, that childhood deep;
For every tear that once was mine,
Became the seed of love divine.
Became the seed of love divine.
