A Scary Happy New Year To You
Here we are at the close of the year and the start of another.
But, the coming years could be like no other.
Throughout this past year we debated and snickered
As the parade of candidates continued to dicker.
We were subjected to discourse we couldn’t believe
Bullying, name-calling, and lies meant to deceive.
And then there were wikis and secrets revealed
And who would have thought tax returns could be concealed.
Just as we thought there could be no end to it
There’s FBI revelations, Russian hacking and more bulls**t.
It was all weird and crazy stuff we’d never seen before
We cast our votes and prayed for a massive outpour.
We watched with hope as the results trickled in
And our hearts died a little at the impossible win.
How could it be? We were all so perplexed.
Half of us could only imagine what could possibly be next.
Happy New Year seems wishful and somewhat trite
But we have to be strong and brace for the fight.
For surely the systems which have long been in place
Will protect our values and the whole human race.
