I like the way your poem plays with religious and cultural references—Lisbon, Rome, Valentine’s Day--without committing to any single meaning. The final line, Excuse me, I don’t know, delivers a sharp and almost humorous ending, like a shrug of indifference, which adds personality to the piece.

Valentine is likely based on a combination of two Valentines who were executed on February 14 in different years by Roman Emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century A.C.E., according to NPR.

I am sure St. Valentine was an awesome person. He believed in doing good and loving people instead of the world today who are either afraid to really live or they are trying to destroy their fellowman. If each of us would try to do one act of kindness each day, how would it change this world. Thanks for sharing this one with us. Sara K
