A Sad Goodbye Under August Skies

¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦¦ in the garden,
Under ¦¦¦ August skies;
The moon had gone but ¦¦¦ stars shone on, -
¦¦¦¦¦ like your beautiful eyes.
Away from ¦¦¦ glitter and gaslight,
in the garden there,
While ¦¦¦ mirth of the throng, in ¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ song,
Floated ¦¦¦ on the air.

¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦ through starlight,
I looked ¦¦¦ at you;
And a feeling came ¦¦¦¦ I could not name, -
¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ starnge and new.
Friends ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦ only, -
Why should it give me pain
To know you ¦¦¦¦¦ go in the morrow,
And ¦¦¦¦¦ not come again?

¦¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦
What matter that we must part?
But ¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦¦ with a ¦¦¦¦¦ surprise,
¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦¦
We did not speak, but your breath on my cheek
Was like a breeze of the south:
¦¦¦ your ¦¦¦¦ hair brushed my forehead
¦¦¦ your kiss fell on my mouth.

¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ -
¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦
¦¦¦ we went in from the garden,
Out of ¦¦¦ sweet starlight,
Back to the ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ music,
¦¦¦ we said 'Good-bye' ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦
¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦
¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦ - ¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦

The river ¦¦¦¦ rolls between us
Can never be crossed, I know,
¦¦¦ the waters are deep ¦¦¦ the shores ¦¦¦ steep,
¦¦¦ a maelstrom whirls below;
But I think we shall always remember,
Though we ¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ strive to forget,
How you looked in my eyes, 'neath the August skies,
After the moon had set; -

¦¦¦ you kissed my lips in the garden,
¦¦¦ we stood in a trance of bliss,
¦¦¦ our hearts seemed ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ together
In ¦¦¦¦ one thrilling kiss.

I’m certain I could but fear it would lose empathy.
