A Sad Christmas

She wakens from a dream. The phone just rang!
The dream about her kids now flees her head.
They’re gone - her nest of children! And that bird
who’d built a nest with her has snuck from bed.

She treads the hall, then hears his lowered voice.
He’s saying, “Dear, I’m sorry we’re apart.”
She knows the time has come to make the choice-
to stay or go. . . and faster pounds her heart.

She takes two bags she’d packed two weeks ago
and places underneath the tree a note,
the one she wrote the day there came first snow
of winter when she’d run without a coat

and screamed into a night that streamed white tears.
A plane awaits; she leaves her shackling fears.

A well written sad verse Andrea, sadly somewhere this will happen to them. Families torn apart. Good luck. Tom.

This is, indeed, very sad, Andrea. And it's something that happens often. Couples fall out of love and we sometimes regret the decisions we make in the middle of the night. Beautifully written, my friend. The reader develops feelings for the woman right away as she "loses" the dream of a nest full of children. Dear Heart will love this one, my friend. Sending hugs to you, Carolyn
