A Reputation Is Not a Soul

They wear the name
before they wear the heart.
Their mouths speak mercy,
But their hands throw stones.

They laugh at the poor,
and call it wisdom.
They look at weakness
as entertainment.

They help you--
then ask for payment
in silence broken by shame,
in rumors louder than truth.

They tell you to pray
while they tighten the circle around you,
a group that claims holiness
while making your life feel like exile.

Their words are weapons…
never medicine,
cutting deeply
while claiming to correct.

They pray not for light,
but for your fall,
and when it comes,
they turn away as if innocent.

They post your pain without permission,
turning your wounds into content,
and your dignity into a joke.

They offer no break, no mercy,
not even in holy time!
Christmas absorbs their Bitterness,
the New Year begins without mercy.

The leader hides in shadow.
A proxy takes the seat beside you,
cups your words,
and spreads them around.

They shame you openly,
circulate your image,
and when you break your silence,
they call you Broken, Unstable, Unreal.

They judge how you spend;
the way you get by day to day,
as if belief gives them the right
to decide for you.

They Welcome you warmly
their decision is already fixed.
When you see behind the curtain,
they erase you
by turning people against you.

So tell me…
Is a good reputation always good?
Is a bad one always deserved?

Evil moves quietly,
often in prayer circles,
often behind clean images
and loud hallelujahs.
But TRUTH - does not need Noise.

Oh wow, this cuts through. Sadly people are prone to issues in groups. As someone who used to professionally manage that its not fun. As a fellow human being, its why I don't like "joining groups". I miss trust it. Your description is correct, though the way to deal with it is frankly to realize what other people think is none of your business.

There certainly truth in your poem. An old saying is "if you want to find the devil, he is amongst those in the church". Innocence is targeted. A good write.

Covering up that is done to keep a good reputation is anything but. Fabulous last line - Truth does not need noise. J :)

Thank you, J. I truly appreciate that insight, covering up only weakens what reputation claims to protect. I’m really glad the last line spoke to you. Truth stands quietly, yet firmly.

Hello Rowena, a brilliant write and a great read. Truth never changes and you’re so right it does not need noise. Have a wonderful New Year my poet friend.

Indeed. It is said that reputation is what people know about us. But character is what we and God know about ourselves. Religion and patriotism, are often refuges for scoundrels--as the news teaches us almost everyday. As Shakespeare told us--"this above all, to thine own self be true" It's the least we can do. Excellent write! Robert

Thank you, Robert. That distinction between reputation and character says it perfectly. Being true to oneself is a daily responsibility and often the hardest one. I appreciate your thoughtful words.

Rowena you say what is much needed. Psychology of the Church at a time had sexual identity conversion shock therapy—we are better than this. Mentality of those in a congregation, anyone, then, who knows the right thing to do, yet fails to do it, is guilty of sin. A brilliant piece you've penned. Here’s to a Hopeful 2026!

Thank you for saying that. Acknowledging past harm is part of moving forward, we are meant to do better when we know better. I appreciate your words and I share your hope for a more honest and compassionate 2026.

Rowena, your last two stanzas nail it. Reputation—even piety—can be weaponized, “But TRUTH - does not need Noise.”

Thank you. It’s true reputation and even piety can be used as weapons but truth doesn’t need noise...

I agree with Tom's comments. In my mind hypocrisy is a sublte form of 'evil' I've been slandered many times in my life, often from co-workers and even family members who espoused to be tolerant Christians. Timely words, Rowena. Wishing you a stellar new year.

Thank you. I agree that hypocrisy can be a subtle form of evil. Sharing someone else’s life ‘just for fun, without consent and attacking them without mercy is, in itself, an evil act.
