A Random Moment

--- Matamoros, 2:00p.m., December 6, 2014 I sit at this table (as I have done many times) wielding a ball-point pen, with insufficiencies of thoughts and words -- out of place. All the while the two dogs -- Guero and Princesa -- shower their affections, licking and nuzzling, in return for caresses, pats, and gifts of food. They respond in kind to attention and gentle treatment. A nearby train sounds its horn, blocks a street, further clogging traffic in this unhealthy border city. The day goes on, time elapses slowly. It is very warm. I exchange minimal phrases with the occupants of this house. The owner has just returned from visiting his dying elder brother at the Social Security Hospital. We leave to visit an acquaintance in the countryside. A random fragment from a life.

I enjoy your stream of consciousness poem! Your pen makes it seem effortless, and I know it is not.

What intrigues me about this poem is how most poets tend to focus on life’s highlights ... or exaggerate their own perception of it. While this poem seems to do the opposite and go out of its way to bring attention to the seemingly mundane. Presenting life “without the fluff” just raw reality. It’s a nice change of pace to be honest. You have a good eye for details.

A chance encounter ~ a snapshot in time ~ life’s random moments ~ are simply sublime | You have a knack for detail, Leo, and a storyteller’s spin. This is a fave for me. ~Mark

First I read the Spanish version and felt depressed because I did not know some of the vocabulary. But I DID grasp the meaning overall when I read the Spanish. Just wish I were better with knowing all the words of Spanish, even with a Spanish major in college, it was never enough for me!! by the way, I really like your writing here.

Free verse at its best, Leo. I first attempted to read your Spanish version, hoping that my knowledge of Italian would suffice! Life is made up of moments and fragments, and you present yours like a photographer who has an eyes for detail. Regards // paul

Amigo, no hablo español, excepto algunas frases, pero leí tu versión en inglés muy bien. / M

There is a loneliness that permeates this piece. It is well expressed and yes “lovely” as Son of Spock so eloquently expressed.
