A Prayer Between Light and Dark
dear god or whatever
you can begin me now
begin me on a whiteboard
a blackboard
anything that can be erased
my cookie was baked with bad blood
begin me as if I were a dying fish
on an alien shore
gulping
impossible air
i took myself to the edge
my chicken heart clutching
a chicken-hearted prayer
sorry
i think i am resurfacing
maybe drowning
only ducks and whales
can speak of this kind of
up and down life
a magnificent whatever
ate me up
like a half-eaten sandwich
i want to say the date I died
but it’s only a margin on a blank page
a ledger of poetry never written
now I am ready to begin
to wipe this face away
to hide myself away
behind your big light
i really mean it
i think
