A Parent's Love Poetry Contest

A Parent's Love

Memories lie strewn like scented petals
Emitting sweet fragrance, they tickle my senses,
Taking me to the time, when after a long wait
We got a gift overdue, lifting our joy to excesses.

Into our nest a birdie came, tender and treasured,
Chirping incessantly, making our dusky days bright
My first born, a baby boy, a late arrival
Who altered my life and made me soar like a kite.

Another came after three years,
As a late-night guest, giving us added joy
Excitedly we watched our little boys run and play
As our house rang loud with laughter and cry.

Elder one was bossy, still they were true brothers
Grew up to be our pride and joy, bringing cheer
No noisy brawl as the younger was obliging
They rarely quarrelled, preferred to be together

The ash laden cinders of our heart blazoned with our sons’ arrival
The elder one was hyperactive and was quite inquisitive
He would ask- “Why rain always falls down and never goes up”
Questions- making the answers less by definitive.

Once when l was holding the little one in my hands
The elder asked- “Of the two, who do you love more”
I could see a trace of sibling jealousy flashing on his face
I fell silent, but knew it was a question I couldn’t ignore

Drawing him closer, after a pause, I answered
You both have place in my heart that no one can take
When you win, my heart sings in joy, when you fall
I come to lift you, when misbehave, my heart, you break.

If you stay a sweet child as you are now,
My heart will have equal space for you and your brother
With all doubts cleared, I saw a glitter glimmer in his eyes
He nestled closer, with no more fears to bother.

Ahhh!! Valsa, two beautiful boys and a delighted mother. I enjoyed reading the extraordinary work about a mother's love and the love of her sons for her. Yes, siblings are going to have some rivalry from time to time and some jealousy. Most of the time it doesn't come in a question, but it is still there. Way to go. 👏✍️. Sara K.

Dear Valsa, such a tender, heartfelt reflection on the sacred weight of raising children. That timeless, awkward question, “Who do you love more?”, is one almost every parent faces, yet the wisdom in your answer is beautiful. Love isn't a finite resource to be divided up, it simply expands to hold each child whole. Yes, the greatest gift we can give our children isn't just equal love, but the steady, unchanging certainty that they each have a place in our hearts that belongs to them alone. Blessings, Daniel

It seems u threatened them to be good in order to keep that love? I was absorbed in your poem; it held me until those 1st two lines of last stanza come off that way to me. It's what I heard. The rest of the poem's 'feel' does not match that. I'm not trying to cause trouble or criticize; I truly thought you'd want to know that I picked up what you probably didn't mean to put down. If you think me out of line and you wish, I'll delete, if you can't. CayCay

Yes, dear Cay Cay, whatever I write about my children and my grand daughter, I show them and they are happy... little joys we can give! You can write about a fictional situation though you have only one child❤️

If my explanation has hurt you, I am so sorry. I didn't mean any hurt. Just expressed the way we both think in ways different because of the culture and background we live in.

I came to tell you than I'm not surprised about cultural differences being the answer. Now that I am here, I do not see your answer about your love for them NOT being threatened. I know my mind works well enough, I didn't imagine you sent me an explanation (by which I learned). We both know you did, and we are not in the Twilight Zone. Right, we aren't? I hope the sponsor is aware of the cultural difference. I felt left out of the contest because I only have one child. I'm actually glad, I'd have been hard pressed to come up with something. I would think, for you, this write is a personal keeper for them to read sometime. CayCay

Awwn I imagine you as a wonderful mother sweet valsa, as a mother of an only child, I do sometimes wonder how it could be to have many kids, would I love them all the same too. Or would I have a fave. Your poem flows so well and is so very genuine and heartfelt, did you show this poem to your children? I think you must! I miss reading you! Hope you are doing well Sending you light always 💫 🌙

Dear Valsa, this poem does a great job of capturing the essence of family memories and the love between siblings. It's easy to feel what the characters are feeling and picture the joys and problems they are facing. The touching way a parent loves their kids really stands out: Drawing him closer, after a pause, I answered Both of you have a place in my heart that no one can take. Showing both the problems and the solutions that can come up between siblings. A winner for sure
