A Nation Divided
Nothing seems the same,
everything has changed
in the sound of voices so loud and dis-similar
all appears quite distinctly familiar.
Same house, same court and garden
cold and shadowy, many seasons hardened.
All the blooms and promises long faded
as representatives hold on green and jaded
in the distance candidates have dried up and fallen
walking cautious in the winter ice and cold now drawing.
Silent shadows creep on shriveled piles of decayed leaves
and creatures of the world hide and wait in the sheaves,
in awe and holiday anticipated desperation
come changes in the attitude and spirit of the nation.
The atmosphere, the feeling and hopeful intent
is much different from the goals and lies once spent
an acceptance of the direction that now is
older, wiser, with promises of so much more to give.
Keep us free, focus on the spirit of the woman and man
we support you and the dreams on which you stand
fulfill those promises so frequently made
sturdy the foundation on which they're laid.
Promises too quickly can easily be broken
and memory twists the words once spoken,
hope and trust gather all people once divided
toward the dreams our forefathers guided.
