A Monarch Butterfly

A monarch butterfly flew past. I wondered if it was the last ‘Cause they are disappearing fast; Our world will be much grimmer. For climate change and pesticides, Plus loss of habitats besides Means we are taking giant strides To make our days much dimmer. These orange beauties did appear Like clockwork every single year. Their loss should make us shed a tear, With hope, a measly glimmer.

Where I live, Ilene, late August and September are the arrival times for monarchs. In past years they were in the thousands feeding off the nectar of beach goldenrods and filling their fuel tanks for the long trip to Mexico. Thw one sad thing about their arrival are those nasty ladies who go around collecting them to make their "butterfly collages"! / Maurice

I used to have monarchs all around in summer, this summer, I have had none. I am shocked.

I remember when they were as thick as locusts in the air! Not much chance of this generation seeing but a few. At least some have found refuge in Hawai'i, where flocks of bulbuls feed on them! Enjoyed your poem, and thoughts, Eileen! Aloha!

Good one, Ilene. I didn't know that the monarch is on the endangered list. What a terrible thought that one day the only fauna on this planet will be the human kind. Butterflies are the only insect I don't mind having one land on me.
