A Matter of Perspectives

When young I saw vast horizons
and broad brush landscapes
that covered distances out
to the edges of understanding,
oceans beyond imagining
and a sky that spilt into
the far reaches of outer space.

Unknown territories expanded
to invade the provinces of dream
and new pleasures hung
on every evening breeze.
I heard Poetry being chanted
in public places and in
in the monasteries of the mind.

Now old, not much has changed
except I have managed
to miniaturize everything to fit
inside the dimensions
of a diminished self whilst I
learn to dissolve into the infinities
of a boundless universe.

I like your 'sky split' and sense of wonder - from the large to the small (like skies to dewdrops) - looking out and in.

Gosh Paul! How do we get back that sense of wonder!? I have these ideas about leaning into eccentricities to free an inner version of self that is more expansive but now I'm unsure whether that is the dissolve. You give a lot to think about within your poetry. Certainly I tend to consider choice and direction of travel and inevitabilities - so often time feels like it fluctuates between being linear and dreamlike - so much so I wonder whether I'm moving towards the beginning more than the end... Always massively grateful I have the honour of getting to read your poetry in this lifetime of course 😊
