A Man Named Lincoln

There once was a man named Lincoln
Who couldn’t stop himself blinkin’
He couldn’t see
And hit a tree
Which started him a-drinkin’.

A wonderfully brisk nonsense limerick: the jaunty AABBA rhyme, conversational “blinkin’/drinkin’” phrasing, and escalating absurdity give it exactly the comic snap the form invites. The final line lands with a delightfully unexpected turn.

Funny, the drink’n didn’t send Lincoln into a tree, but the tree caused him to drink! Clever!
