A Long, Dark Road

The silence between them, is visually keen
while the sound from the tires, is picking up speed

With her head turned away, she is called to the window
where poles along the roadside, cast ominous shadows
The drone of the highway stifiles air all around them
and has filled up the muteness with an apocalypse wind

Far down the freeway, nestled like hives
are the small housing tracts, tiny houses alive
Burning the night, like unreachable stars

She imagines a couple, sharing a table
sharing their day, while children would play
Where every small thing, was sorted and labeled
Where people shared dinner, together are able,
to know with assurance that nothing will change

Her hands in her lap, and fingers are numb
Bemused she will wonder where her body has gone
All the signs, sights, silhouettes seem depleted

She takes a deep breath, as the car travels on
There's a sound of a sigh, and a world passing by
The road going home....is a road that is long

Such a sad poem, Carrie. The 'melancholy' comes alive along this 'long, dark road.' Congratulations on your well-deserved First Place win. Hugs, Sandra

To me, this is excellent. I am no longer surprised when I find myself in your poems, my undefined feelings expressed as though you sorted the lines from my private wonderments. Nope, not surprised any longer, but awed, amazed and, I think, grateful. Your writes often serve me as only poetry can and is, at its best, intended to do. FAV ... 7 ... Appreciation ... CayCay

Love the bleak feel to this, Carrie. We're all being taken somewhere, and the destination is not necessarily of our choosing. Great write. Well done. Viv x

A truly fine poem that sets deep images to ponder. Life and its fears are with us all and the great fear of our fateful, ending day travels with us daily. A7
