A Life Once Lived

It’s like it never happened,
you and I.
I’d swear it was a dream,
if not for the photos proving we were real once.

When I saw you,
it was as if time erased us.
Did you forget the future we built in whispers,
the one we swore would never fade?

Your eyes once painted entire worlds in all different colours.
Your mouth sang the most beautiful songs.
Your touch healed wounds I didn’t know I carried,
and your absence taught me new ones.

I would trade anything to feel it all again.
If there were another chance at living,
I’d carve your name into my purpose.

And still,
when you pass me on the street,
you’ll smile and say hello.
But beneath that calm exchange lives a quiet pain,
a longing best ignored,
a love pretending for the best,
it never happened.
