A Knowing Without Knowing How
The woods were quiet, idyllic, proud.
It was spring, so the butterflies were back.
Cattails honored the pond with their resolute presence.
A lone doe was delicately drinking the cool, clear water.
All was still in the woods.
Without warning, everything changed.
All of her senses were on ready alert.
She looked up, paused, listened.
She heard nothing,
But her acute senses were on fire.
Get ready to run!
A slight rustle in the grass, and she suddenly
Had an immediate knowing without knowing
How she knew.
Not daring to look back.
She caught a quick whiff of mountain lion as she ran,
The chase was on.
