A Kiss

My mother kissed me on the cheek before she died
I never felt so warm and full of pride
I think of that kiss every now and then
It saddens me that I'll never see her on earth again

Read the poem, “Rock Me to Sleep,” by Elizabeth Akers Allen. I really needed that yesterday. My friend gave me a poetry book for my birthday last month. That one was a golden nugget. The refrain of a passed away mother: Rock me to sleep, mother – rock me to sleep! It is like an adult lullaby, and apparently people have made it into a song.

Beautiful. You will see her again. On earth, darling woman, she lives within you, whether you believe that or not. Mothers are your first home. My mother died in a public ward all alone on her own (cancer at 32yrs), when I was 9yrs, and I wish I had that memory of a last kiss from her. I wish I had been there with her, so that she wasn't alone. That is such a strong and beautiful gift she left you with - that memory. I do know, without doubt, your mother (and my mother) live within us, as we move forward. They are always with us; they never really left us at all. I believe they watch over us and walk beside us in every path we choose. Perhaps they guide our hands every now and again as we write what is inside us, that many seldom see. xx
