A Hymn of Him (Conversion Of An Unbeliever)

In ninety-six, by grace my soul was claimed
God called me for a purpose clearly named

His voice was sure summons strong and clear
A holy call the heart cannot unhear

Though infant waters marked my Catholic start
A Reformed pledge would later stir my heart

On Father’s Day, the year two thousand came
I rose baptized in Jesus Christ’s great name

My earthly father, gone the May before
Was honored as I sought the heavenly shore

I joined the church and praised the Lord above
For answered prayer and patient, faithful love

I once had wished that Scripture I could quote
Now treasured verses through my memory float

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for Your sacrifice
Though I deserve no gift, You paid the price

Through Father, Son, and Providential Will
You love me and guide me by The Voice quiet and still

Although my flesh may sway my steps astray
My heart desires Your will and seeks Your way

When life’s long road has reached its final bend
May “I remember” crown my journey’s end

Not “I wish I would have,” spoken with regret
But grateful joy for every path You set

With God both guarding and directing me
His perfect will and love a revealed decree

I pray to finish all He bids of me
In Jesus’ name, Amen (so let it be)

I praise the Lord whose goodness does not cease
Whose purposes bring courage, hope, and peace

I’ve taught children in many a classroom
And learned beside them so that our faith could bloom

The children brought such wonder to each Sunday
While Christ transfigured lit our lesson’s way

We spoke of prayer, its power and its place
And trusted friends who help us walk in grace

I asked the Lord that He might make it right
That my family would have Jesus in their sight

I prayed as well for friends from long ago
That Christ The Savior, each would come to know

Wherever they may live or journey these days
May they be well and meet salvation face to face

[At times] God’s voice felt heavy, silent, deep within
While anger rose and I wrestled to win

“Why am I angry, Lord?” became my plea
Replace my heart through spiritual surgery

I longed for meaning, purpose, and release
And prayed the anger leave and I'd have peace

“Where do I fit in?” I asked the Lord in prayer
Then the Light shone through glass needing repair

I prayed that someone special might appear
To share the road for companionship here

I struggled as the Apostle Paul had strained
And through his witness I saw the Hope without stain

By The Holy Spirit the Roman verses spoke
And through Your truth the cloud of heaviness broke

I saw the things I needed to surrender
And a new life in Christ was the remainder

Some friendships, how I looked, old habits die hard
Were placed before Jesus, my plea as a bard

I thought again of days with longer hair
And nighttime hours (many I don’t remember)

The night-owl life, the licentious debauchery
Must yield to Kingdom work now that I can see

My time belongs to God, each breath and hour
To serve as He reigns and rest the bower

I joined the choir to give God praise
I bartered for spiritual songs, gave away my rock n roll ways

Where rock and roll once filled my listening ear
Now hymns and sacred songs help me draw near

Near to the Lord, and thank You for every page and phase
Of these journal lines reflecting conversion (You rightly get the praise)

They let me trace all wonders ever new
An unbelieving heart made faithful and true

As “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” sounds
And a cherished verse from that song rebounds

Off of my heart and continually reminds me
The things of earth grow strangely dim (when I begin to see)

Yes, worldly things shall fade from mortal sight
When seen within the glory of His Light

So may my steps, my teaching, prayers, and days
Bear witness to His mercy and give praise

So repent, repent, repent and pray, pray, pray (as He prays)
We are under the tutelage of the Ancient of Days

Through saving grace to service yet to be
May Christ be glorified with raised hands and Gospel feet
