A Hard-Boiled Egg

You crack the shell and start to peel;
It may slide off completely.
If not, too bad, but here's the deal:
The rest won't come off neatly.

But when it's clean, it needs a rinse
In case some shell is clinging
And next comes salt, which will evince
The flavor it is bringing.

Some slice it up and others bite
While weirdos pop it whole.
Whichever way, it will delight
Despite cholesterol.

So boil one if you're in the mood,
Though we should thank the hen
For bringing us this simple food
To eat now and again.

Now why didn't I think of this? I agree with Jan, peeling a hard boiled egg is frustrating and maddening. I will take Robert's suggestion and add baking soda to the water. Many thanks for coming up with this wonderful poem, Ilene. / M

Turning a hard-boiled egg into a lovely poem could be tricky, but you did it effortlessly, Ilene:) ~ There was a time when I used to eat an egg daily, but cholesterol (whether true or not) persuaded me to cut them down to one a week! Regards // paul

Who but you could come up with a poem dealing with the lowly egg - another masterpiece! A little clue re peeling boiled eggs - place baking soda in the water you boil the eggs in and the shells will come off smoothly every time. I saw this bit of trivia on the computer one day and it works. Bob H

Your first stanza made me laugh as it is so infuriating when there are tiny bits of shell left - what a wonderful observation! I rarely eat eggs, just the occasional egg and cress sandwich or scrambled eggs with smoked salmon but that is a very special treat!:-) hugs jan xx
