A Great Kindness
Persistent dry and hacking cough. Conversation halting due to mucus emerging from the lungs. Swift apologies exchange like a business transaction. The white room is perfumed with the smell of Vix vapor rub and the inevitable. Grandmother and grandson hold hands. Visiting hours have officially expired. Caretakers make their rounds.
The nurse says my name
“Okay, but only this once”.
I’m allowed to stay.
