A Few Years Back

Is that your son by his mother's side?
When he calls you daddy, do you beam with pride?
Are you building memories of a lifetime, Jack?
You're a lot like me----------a few years back.

Is that your little girl? Would you stop for a while?
Been quite some time since I saw a child smile
A few basic needs are all I lack
You're a lot like me----------a few years back.

Please talk to me. Don't pass me by.
Sometimes when I'm alone I cry
Got what's left of my life in an old sack
You're a lot like me----------a few years back.

How's your job? Are you seeing new faces?
Climbing the ladder and going places.
Approaching the top. You're right on track
You're a lot like me----------a few years back.

I bet your home is nice, on a manicured lot
Now a cardboard box is all I got
I had it all then I watched it crack
You're a lot like me----------a few years back.

My body hurts, and my hands, they shake
Life is about the choices we make
Freight train's coming, guess I ought to pack.
You're a lot like me---------a few years back.

There is a poignant and lyrical quality to this superb poem Vince. I can almost here it being sung quietly with an acoustic guitar accompliment. I'm no musician but it's how I think, read and write poetry sometimes. Cheers - Gary

Dear Vince, your profound pen speaks in the poignant voice of the homeless, a voice which is regularly dehumanized. Your gifted pen gives a potent voice to the invisible people on the streets, with intense and relatable emotions of despair, regret and loneliness; "Please talk to me. Don't pass me by. / Sometimes when I'm alone I cry." Such a powerful piece, thought-provoking and so deeply moving. The beauty of your empathy shines in this stirring and beautifully composed piece. Such an expressive and impressive first post. Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

Hi Vince, just want to say that this is wonderful, it's so true that many people who are 'losers' were once 'winners'. The last three stanzas are the best and are really superb.

This piece is amazingly touching, Vince. Feels lyrical like a song wrung from the heart and soul. Reminds me that although we might make choices, sometimes regrets are attached. Love this. Woven together like a wide tapestry fringed by 'a few years back'. Congratulations on being featured this week! Best to you and yours....God bless! Mikki

This write really reminds me of one of my favorite poets, Edgar Guest. He wrote a lot in this style with the repetitive phrase. This is just awesome, Vince!! Thanks so much for all you write and your WONDERFUL humor. Congratulations on a very well-deserved selection as a feature this week. Love ya, Sue
