A Father Calls Home
A Father Calls Home
By Elton Camp
A little girl answered the phone’s loud ring
From it, a man’s voice proceeded to spring
“Hello there, Honey, this is your Daddy here.
Is Mommy perhaps to the phone very near?”
“No, she’s up in the bedroom with Uncle Joe.”
“You don’t have an Uncle Joe. That I know.”
The next words, the father was infuriated to hear
“He comes all time whenever you’re not here.”
“Honey, on the bedroom door I want you to knock.
Then say you see Daddy’s car coming up the block.”
The child returned to the telephone, the caller to tell
“I did it, & Mommy’s screaming & Uncle Joe as well.”
The woman then fell down the stairs & broke her neck
Uncle Joe sped away and was killed in an auto wreck
Even stranger, when the Daddy got home all was well
Realizing it had been a wrong number, said, “Oh hell.”
(Note: This is based on an old joke sent me by James in the U.K.
But I’ve changed it a whole lot and feel justified in claiming
some ownership of this version.)
